The club’s history began in 1876 when James Gordon Bennett Jr. organized what was billed as the first outdoor polo match in the United States at Dickel’s Riding Academy in New York City. The game became very popular and soon polo clubs popped up all over the country.
During WWII, the polo fields were taken over by the US Army and used for barracks. After the war ended, polo again took off. Harry East, a top polo player from Texas, came to SBPC in the 1950’s and the polo field names were changed to honor him.
