Harry Styles is set to get a steamy look with Florence Pugh in the upcoming Marvel movie titled Don t Worry Darling. Before that, he ll portray a 1950s policeman in Michael Grandage’s upcoming drama based on a boy torn between two lovers. Before the drama s premiere, learn all the cool things we know so far.
It’s based on a sensitive, sweeping novel
My Policeman is an adaptation of Bethan Roberts’s 2012 novel of the same name, which was previously adapted for the stage in 2013. The story is set in 1950s Brighton and follows Marion (Emma Corrin) and Tom (Harry Styles), a school teacher and policeman who meet and fall in love on the coast. Patrick (David Dawson), a curator who has moved to Brighton to recover from the death of a previous lover, also develops feelings for Tom. The men embark on a passionate affair – in spite of the fact that homosexuality is illegal – but jealousy shatters their arrangement when they are forced to face the stark reality of their situation. Fast forward to the ’90s, and frail Patrick reenters the lives of now married couple Marion and Tom with predictably dramatic consequences.
The novel weaves together the confessional narratives of both Marion and Patrick, who battle their inner demons and the overwhelming desire that keeps pulling them back to Tom. The latter also highlights the restrictions placed on gay men at the time and the harsh realities they could be faced with if their private lives became public. According to an article published in The Guardian in 2012, author E. M. Forster was inspired by his relationship with policeman Bob Buckingham and his friendship with May, Forster’s wife.
May Forster, an English professor who lived in the United States, lived with her lover, Buckingham, from whom she was separated but not divorced. One of Forster’s former students, Maylon LeMay, wrote that although May was jealous of her lover’s affairs and difficult to be around, she refused to listen when others warned her that he was about to break up her marriage. Perhaps May stood to gain from what Forster offered: not only money but also entrance into the life of the cultural elite. When Forster suffered a series of strokes later in life, May cared for him until his death.
The first stills have sent the internet into a tailspin
On June 9, Amazon released two stills from the film. One showed a sun-drenched Styles and Corrigan gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes while in a pool, while the other showed the pair in a gallery with Dawson’s Patrick , who appears to be talking them through a piece of art. While the former is joyous, the tension between the trio is apparent in the latter.
The cast is stacked with British talent, both emerging and established
Corrin, Styles and Dawson play Marion, Tom and Patrick in the ’50s. In June 2021, Deadline reported that Kadiff Kirwan, best known for his roles in Chewing Gum and The Stranger, had also joined the cast. The talent behind the camera is equally impressive: director Michael Grandage is the former artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse, while screenwriter Ron Nyswaner was nominated for an Oscar for penning Philadelphia in 1994.
The film is hitting screens sooner than you might think
Amazon has announced that My Kindergarten Cop will be available in theaters on October 21 prior to becoming available for download on Prime Video on November 4. This makes it a perfect candidate for the Academy award nominations of 2023.
